About Helen
In 1991, Helen Sharman became the first British astronaut, when she spent eight days orbiting the Earth. Working as a chemist, she was chosen from a pool of 13,000 applicants, responding to an advert on the radio. After 18 months of spaceflight training, Helen was sent into space, where her tasks included medical, agricultural and chemical experiments.
On her return to Earth, Helen became a science communicator and speaker, and was awarded an OBE in 1993. Her spacesuit is on display at the Science Museum in London, and Helen is invited to speak worldwide about her experiences in space – inspiring the next generation of scientists and adventurers.
