Free science fun in the local community!

Science on Your Doorstep is a community outreach project from Norwich Science Festival and The Forum. Throughout the year, the team have been working to deliver a host of fantastic events for the community - such as Bugs and Beasts at Waterloo Park - and we thought it was time for a winter update on their work so far!

October Half Term

Science on Your Doorstep Project Coordinator, Alina, worked closely with local community groups in October Half Term to deliver a range of accessible, fun and free science activities for families in NR3.

Bert's Amazing Creatures at Oak Grove Community Centre  

The Science on Your Doorstep team joined Oak Grove Community Church on Tue 29 October, along with mobile petting zoo - Bert's Amazing Creatures. Under Bert's close supervision, visitors enjoyed the chance to get up close and personal with a giant rabbit, a snake, a bearded dragon, two rats and a centipede! Undoubtedly it was the giant rabbit, with its soft fur and incredible size that was the star of the show.

Luminous Tales Shadow Puppets at Catton Grove Community Centre

Science on Your Doorstep partnered with Luminous Tales to bring a magical shadow puppet workshop to Catton Grove for October half term! Families enjoyed learning about light and how it passes through different materials, before going on to create their own shadow puppet and then performing short - but magical - stories using their puppets to the rest of the group!

Wonderdome Planetarium at Waterloo Park

This special event saw the amazing Wonderdome - an inflatable planetarium - come to Waterloo Park, in the room above The Feed Cafe. Families enjoyed free, immersive space shows with presenter Dr Dave Willis, on a rollercoaster ride through the planets. The Friends of Waterloo Park kindly provided free space-inspired crafts and activities for families to take part in whilst they waited for the next Wonderdome performance.

Science on Your Doorstep at Christmas

The team were delighted to take part in Christmas at the Costessey Centre on Sat 30 Nov, at the Costessey Centre. The Norfolk and Norwich Science Association and Fossils and Fireworks provided free science activities with a festive twist, including the science of snowflakes and an early years veterinary hospital for treating poorly polar bears and reindeers!
