How can we better understand the ocean’s most majestic and awe-inspiring animals?

Steve Backshall MBE has always been fascinated by whales: their social skills, intelligence, their hunting techniques and how much we have in common with them!

In this family talk, Steve will share some of his amazing whale stories, and outline the dangers faced by these incredible animals and what we can do to better protect them.

Perfect for younger nature enthusiasts!

This event will include a book signing, and Steve's book Deep Blue will be available for sale.

    • Getting to UEA

    If driving to this event, please park in the West car park on Chancellors Drive. This will be signposted as the overflow car park and has been assigned to Norwich Science Festival event attendees. Follow signs to overflow car park/West car park.

    There is a step free route from West car park to Lecture Theatre 1, please see the below map and follow the blue dotted line.

    There are bus routes from Norwich city centre to UEA, including the First Bus Service 25/26 which picks up the railway station, going through the city and terminating on campus.

    Access Information

    We offer free Essential Companion tickets for those with access requirements and need someone to accompany them to make their visit easier and more comfortable. These can be booked online at the same time as booking a ticket for this event.

    FAQs

    • How can I book tickets?

      Norwich Science Festival tickets can only be booked online on our website at norwichsciencefestival.co.uk. We are not able to take bookings over the phone or in person.

      There is a limit of maximum ten tickets per transaction. If you wish to book more tickets, you will need to complete another transaction.

      Please note that some bookings are made via our booking system, Ticketsolve, and other events must be booked directly through our partner venues, such as Norwich Theatre.

      Please show your ticket (printed or mobile) on entry to the event, or give your name which will appear on a customer list.

      All tickets are sent out electronically via email. If you haven't received a confirmation email, please check your junk or spam folder. If you still can't find it, please email [email protected] or the venue through which you bought the ticket.

    • Can I get a refund for a NSF event?

      Refunds are not offered for paid-for events, unless an event is cancelled or postponed.

      Occasionally, events may be cancelled at short notice due to circumstances beyond the organisers’ control. In the event of cancellation of pre-book events, every endeavor will be made to contact ticket holders and refunds will be offered. We regret that we may not be able to offer an alternative for cancelled events. Please check the website for up-to-date event information.

      Admission to the event is at the discretion of the event organiser.

      Events will run in line with local and national government guidelines at the time of the Festival.

    • What should I do if I have accessibility requirements?

      If you are booking tickets directly with Norwich Science Festival, our booking platform Ticketsolve will prompt you to enter any accessibility requirements during the checkout process.

      You can also contact a member of the team to discuss access requirements at [email protected]. It may be helpful to provide your name, number in party, number in party with specific requirements (e.g. wheelchair place required), and what type of ticket(s) you have booked (if more than one price point). We'll then liaise with the venue to ensure that there are places reserved for your party. On arrival at the event, please identify your party to our event staff, and you'll be shown to the reserved places.

    Steve Backshall is a BAFTA award-winning wildlife expert, television presenter, author and speaker. He is best known for his captivating television career, including the phenomenally successful BBC series, Deadly 60, and his work on the seven-year BBC documentary project, Our Changing Planet.

    His passion for the natural world, combined with his daring and adventurous nature, continues to inspire audiences of all ages.
