Learning Event Picture This! Drawing with Light

Event dates

Mon 15 Oct -
Tue 16 Oct -
Wed 17 Oct -

Picture this! Experience Ripstop Theatre’s new show exploring the art of photography and the pioneering work of female photographer, Olive Edis. After the show, explore and investigate light, dark and the properties of materials. Then focus and apply your knowledge, creating your own ‘shadow scape’ gallery of interactive pictures.

Spend the day with Norwich Puppet Theatre and Ripstop Shadow Theatre exploring and investigating the wonderful world of light and dark.

Watch a show: ‘Picture this!’, Ripstop Shadow Theatre’s new show, combines cut-outs, photographs, shadow theatre and play to illuminate and celebrate the extraordinary achievements of Norfolk photographer Olive Edis.

Have a go: After seeing the professionals at work, participants set about exploring and investigating light, dark and shadow play. We will look at how light behaves and test how it responds to different materials. Participants will then work in small groups to create their own shadow pictures by drawing upon their knowledge and experience.
The class’s ‘shadow scape’ gallery will then stay in school and can form the basis of further cross-curricular learning and engagement opportunities, including the creation of your own shadow shows and performances. The subject focus of the images can be linked to lots of different themes and can focus on topic based learning.

We come to you: Workshops will happen in school and we can adjust our timings to suit your routine.
We work with your classes: One of our experienced and dedicated workshop leaders will partner with your class for the day – for this reason, we are only able to work with up to 3 classes on any given day, though we can visit you on more than one occasion if required.

Workshop requirements:
– Space for the workshop(s) to take place in with access to power – classrooms are fine though, with more than one class we may require use of a larger space like a hall for the show element of the day.
– The space(s) must be able to be made dark
– Access to the space 1 hour prior to the workshop start time to set up and up to 30 minutes at the end of the day to pack away.
– Tables (minimum 6)
– Help and support from staff during the workshop.
– Awareness of any special requirements and/or topic based learning subject focus requirements.
